Border Strip at Nordbahnhof station
Watchtower and elements of the border strip at Nordbahnhof
An archaeological excavation on the grounds of the Nordbahnhof station on Gartenstraße in 2017 uncovered numerous elements and remnants of the border strip that bends to the north here. In addition to the foundations and bottom section of a square watchtower of the BT-9 type, numerous buried barriers and security installations from three decades were also found. These include concrete posts and remnants of barbed wire from the early border fences, concrete posts from the inner and signal fence, the patrol path and foundations as well as cable strands from the line of lights in this area. The foundations of the torn-down railway buildings were also preserved, including bricked-up cellar doors from 1961. Finds from the excavation were added to the Berlin Wall Foundation collection. With completion of the survey, the area was destroyed and a new building was erected.
